�� What is a Figure of Speech?

A figure of speech is a special way of using words to make a sentence more interesting, beautiful, or creative.

(मराठी: अलंकार म्हणजे असे भाषाशैलीचे सौंदर्यवर्धक साधन जे वाक्य अधिक प्रभावी आणि आकर्षक बनवते.)

 Types of Figures of Speech (with examples)

1️⃣ Simile (उपमा अलंकार)

Definition: Comparing two things using like or as.
Example:

She is as beautiful as a flower.

He runs like a cheetah.

(उदाहरण: ती फुलासारखी सुंदर आहे.)

2️⃣ Metaphor (रूपक अलंकार)

Definition: Saying one thing is another thing (without using like or as).
Example:

The classroom was a zoo.

He is a lion on the field.

(उदाहरण: तो मैदानावर सिंह आहे.)

3️⃣ Personification (मानविकीकरण अलंकार)

Definition: Giving human qualities to animals or things.
Example:

The sun smiled at me.

 

 

The wind whispered in my ear.

(उदाहरण: वारा कुजबुजत होता.)

4️⃣ Alliteration (अनुप्रास अलंकार)

Definition: Repeating the same sound at the start of nearby words.
Example:

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.

She sells seashells on the seashore.

(उदाहरण: "क" वर्णाची पुनरावृत्ती – "काका कढईत कचोरी काढतात."

5️⃣ Hyperbole (अतिशयोक्ती अलंकार)

Definition: An exaggeration to show strong feeling or effect.
Example:

I am so hungry, I could eat a horse!

She cried a river of tears.

(उदाहरण: मी इतका भुकेला आहे की अख्खा डोंगर खाऊ शकतो.)

1️⃣ Metaphor (रूपक अलंकार)

English Definition:
Saying one thing is another thing (without using like or as).

मराठीत:
एका गोष्टीला दुसऱ्या गोष्टीसारखे न म्हणता, थेट तेच आहे असे म्हणणे.

Example:

He is a lion on the field.

तो मैदानावर सिंह आहे.

2️⃣ Simile (उपमा अलंकार)

Definition:
Comparing two things using like or as.

मराठी:
'सारखा', 'प्रमाणे' किंवा 'सारखी' असे शब्द वापरून दोन गोष्टींची तुलना करणे.

Example:

She is as pretty as a doll.

ती बाहुलीसारखी गोंडस आहे.

3️⃣ Personification (मानविकीकरण अलंकार)

Definition:
Giving human qualities to animals or objects.

मराठी:
प्राण्यांना, वस्तूंना किंवा निसर्गाला माणसासारखे गुण देणे.

Example:

The moon smiled at me.

चंद्राने माझ्याकडे हसून पाहिले.

4️⃣ Alliteration (अनुप्रास अलंकार)

Definition:
Repeating the same sound at the beginning of words.

मराठी:
एकाच ध्वनीने सुरू होणाऱ्या शब्दांची पुनरावृत्ती.

Example:

Big brown bear baked biscuits.

मोठा बदामी अस्वल बिस्किटे भाजतो.

5️⃣ Hyperbole (अतिशयोक्ती अलंकार)

Definition:
An extreme exaggeration to show strong feeling.

मराठी:
अत्यंत मोठी夸गी करून भावना व्यक्त करणे.
